  3. Understand your options

Learn whether cancellation, a buyout, a transfer or a claim may fit your situation.

  4. Decide what's next

You choose whether to move forward. You're never obligated to hire anyone.

Why this matters

Common problems with solar sales

Residential solar contracts often run 20 to 25 years. Consumer complaints about how they were sold have drawn attention from the FTC and state attorneys general.

Savings that never showed up

Homeowners are told their power bill will drop to zero, then end up paying a utility bill and a solar payment every month.

Hidden escalator clauses

Lease and PPA payments that rise by 2% to 3.9% every year can add thousands over the life of the contract.

Tax credit promises

Buyers are told they'll get a federal tax credit they can't use, or aren't told a lease means the company keeps it.

High-pressure signing

Door-to-door reps rush homeowners to e-sign on a tablet without a chance to read the contract or the loan terms.

Is this you?

A free review may help if…

  • You were told your electric bill would be eliminated or drastically reduced
  • You were promised tax credits or rebates you never received
  • No one explained that your payments go up every year
  • You were pressured to sign the same day
  • Your total cost is much higher than what you were quoted
  • Your system produces far less power than estimated
  • You didn't get a copy of your contract or a cancellation notice
  • A lien or UCC filing on your home surprised you

FAQ

Questions about getting out of a solar contract

Can I really get out of a solar contract?

Sometimes. Options depend on your contract, how it was sold and your state's laws. Common paths include a cancellation within your legal cooling-off period, a negotiated release or buyout, a transfer to a home buyer, or a claim when a contract was sold through misrepresentation. Some contracts cannot be cancelled. A specialist can review yours and explain what may apply.

Is SolarUnbound a law firm?

No. SolarUnbound is a free matching service. We connect homeowners with independent third parties, which may include law firms, attorneys and contract-review companies. We do not give legal advice, and using this site does not create an attorney-client relationship.

How much does it cost?

Checking your situation with SolarUnbound is free. If a partner offers you services, it will explain any fees before you agree to anything, and you are never required to hire anyone. Many consumer attorneys work on contingency, but terms vary by firm.

What counts as being misled by a solar salesperson?

Common complaints include promises that your electric bill would disappear, savings estimates that never happened, tax credits you didn't qualify for, undisclosed annual payment increases (escalators), a lien you weren't told about, and being rushed to sign on a tablet without seeing the full contract.

What if my panels were installed years ago?

You may still have options. Deadlines vary by the type of claim and by state, so it is worth having your contract reviewed sooner rather than later.

Will this hurt my credit?

No. Completing our questionnaire does not involve a credit check. Stopping payments on a solar loan or lease on your own can hurt your credit, so get advice before you stop paying.

What will I need?

Your solar contract or loan agreement if you have it, recent utility bills from before and after installation, and any texts, emails or brochures from the salesperson. Don't worry if you can't find everything.

Who will contact me?

After you submit the form, SolarUnbound or up to four partners that review solar contracts in your state may call, text or email you. You can see them on our Marketing Partners page and opt out at any time by replying STOP or telling the caller.
